Retro review of the Commandos game series: Commandos 3: Destination Berlin.

Hello dear friend! In the previous parts of my review of the series (here they are http://blogs.stopgame.ru/topic/12682/ actually the first one and http://blogs.stopgame.ru/topic/12776/ second), I mentioned that Commandos as such have died in our time (sadness =,( ). So, in my opinion, it all started in 2003 with the release Commandos 3: Destination Berlin. Pyro Studios, apparently, they decided that they were great masters and the concept they came up with would live forever, or they simply did not have enough strength due to Praetorians, published the same year. In any case, here is the 3rd part of the retro review of the series Commandos..

What’s new Commando?

If you’ve read past reviews, you might have noticed that the game has evolved from the first to the second part. As for the third part, the maximum resolution there did not increase from 800×600. The figures of the game characters were generally transferred from the second part (for the most part), but the locations (again, for the most part) evoke positive emotions, the developers still retained their attention to detail and picturesque landscapes. Finally, after so many years, it became possible to move the camera as much as you like and see “full 3D” but only in buildings. Sound waves when running or killing have disappeared. So now you have to eyeball the noise level. It is also worth noting (still) the improvement in graphics after the second part, but at a meager level.
The gameplay has undergone minor changes, tasks have become more dynamic. The cards became more compact, which made it possible to saturate the game with actions. In total we have 12 missions (just like in the second part), divided into 3 companies and 1 training. We see the secondary nature and self-copying of developers on almost every corner (a little less than completely). Compared to the second part, the arsenal of means of destroying opponents has not undergone fundamental changes. The machine gun is good at close range against numerous enemy clusters. The rifle is a great thing for long-range combat, and what’s remarkable is that it kills with one shot. An automatic rifle is weaker than a simple rifle, but its range is significantly greater. Add here all sorts of grenades, mines, explosives and service pistols with unlimited ammunition. From the new: a flamethrower that bursts with fire and gas grenades that burst with poison.

From Stalingrad to Berlin..

Plot? It’s not there as such. In general, as in previous parts. There are 3 companies: Central Europe, Normandy and Stalingrad. In each we get the opportunity to take part in the most striking events of World War II. And inside the companies, there is still some semblance of a plot. For example, Stalingrad (attention! If you are going to play in the future, now there will be a spoiler). First, we kill another sniper as a sniper. After killing the overly enraged sniper, bombs will fall on Stalingrad and the Germans will go on the offensive, which means we have to defend ourselves. After we repulse the Fritz attack, a counter-offensive follows, followed by the hijacking of the plane, but we SUDDENLY betray. Now we are in Berlin (the citadel of evil) and therefore we need to run away, simultaneously punishing the traitor. Each company has its own storyline. It should be noted that a person accustomed to the relatively leisurely gameplay of the previous parts will not be too comfortable here. If you think about strategy for a long time, the traitor will run away, the ships that need to be blown up will sail away, and the equipment that needs to be destroyed will leave.
Can a few people turn the tide of a war?? In reality, no. But in the virtual world everything is possible!

We have a new https://rivalrycasino.co.uk/mobile-app/ addition again?

Unlike the second part, no new heroes appeared in Commandos 3; on the contrary, the developers trimmed the list of commandos. Be that as it may, there are 6 heroes under our command. A masterful demolitionist and just a nice guy – Sapper. Fast and agile shorty – Thief. Loving other people’s outfits and his trusty syringe – Spy. Bald and cold-blooded aristocrat with a sniper rifle – sniper. Water is his element, and a throwing knife is always with him – Scuba Diver. And of course, sitting on heavy steroids, sleeping in an embrace only with his all-metal knife – our good old friend Green Beret. As a rule, 2-3 people are enough for one task, and for the mass extermination of hostile social. cells in fortification. area, a Beret armed to the teeth will approach.

Where did Natasha go with her feminine charms, the Driver with his sweet smile and green cap and stupid dog Whiskey?? Maybe they died on combat missions? Or Natasha married the Driver, and Whiskey is their wedding gift from the Commando squad? Or maybe the Driver crashed into a pole and died, Natasha was discovered, and after much torture she died, and Whiskey died due to bad canned food? Be that as it may, history is silent on this matter.
But now, thanks to the director’s innovations, in some screensavers you can get to know your already favorite characters better. Listening to Beret’s conversations with the Spy is a pleasure.

How’s it going in hell??

The gameplay, as already mentioned, has hardly changed at all. All the same sabotage activities behind the front line and on it. There are a lot more shootouts, more enemies and, in fact, more action. Missions are divided into “combat” and “secret”, although nothing prevents a super secret operation from turning into an underworld with grenades, BFGs and subsequent genocide.
Each fighter has his own special skills and weaknesses. So, when playing as a Thief, you should not pick up a machine gun and run to attack a fortified. enemy area or dress Beret in a German suit and wander around the base as if nothing had happened. Unlike previous parts, now everyone can throw grenades (Sapper has lost one of his individual skills) and tie up and then carry corpses. In addition to this, in special. commando courses included driving lessons. Thus, each of them can easily drive a car, motorcycle or tank. Surely this was the reason for the disappearance of the Driver. But this significantly simplified the passage of the game and made it more believable (otherwise one thought could not fit into my head: why an elite commando fighter does not know how to use military equipment?).

Each fighter has his own specialty, and you need to use them where they are needed most, and not at your discretion. In other words, you need to think tactically. The first three parts of Commandos are deservedly called tactical strategies, their gameplay confirms this.
As for the complexity, everything here is much simpler than in the second and even more so in the first parts. AI is noticeably better than in the previous part, but is still naive; when he sees a pack of cigarettes, he rushes to get it in a fit of happiness and does not see traces of blood. But if earlier the enemies, upon hearing shots, rushed to see “who is there,” now they send their friends on reconnaissance, while they themselves take up defensive positions. Also, if your spy is spotted, you can jump into some truck or car and sit there. The squeamish little person won’t even think about looking at what’s inside and will go on about her business. To complete the game you will need not only a lot of time, but not a little. The interface has changed significantly. Became more stupid and inconvenient. But after playing for a while you get used to it.
Sometimes the game throws up complex tasks that require strategic thinking and make you want to stop playing the game, but there aren’t many of them. Pyro Studios Ever since the second part they have been following the lead of the mass player.

Her Majesty Graphics..

Commandos is famous for its landscapes. And I have no complaints about them. Everything is gorgeous: the blood-stained beaches of Normandy, the railway station in France invisible due to the rain, even the brutal cold of Stalingrad is beautiful here. The interior of the buildings has been improved, there are more small details. Large flakes of snow, a newspaper, which was caught by a gust of wind, an armored train rushing towards nowhere, on the carriages of which we will jump, run and commit violent murders. As in the case of the second part, you can spend tens of minutes looking at the local landscapes. The animation is also quite good, take for example Beret, who gracefully cuts the throats of the Germans, distracted by his thoughts about the great and beautiful. Videos on the game engine have evolved from chaotic pixel movements into something spectacular and pleasing to the eye. The landing in Normandy alone leaves a lot of impressions. The level of detail does its job: creates an atmosphere of brutal war.

Soundtrack..

The game sound is still good. The music harmonizes perfectly with the gameplay and adds atmosphere to the game. Epic marches that sound very well during battle are replaced by nerve-wracking ones during covert operations.

Well, in the end..

You know, about Commandos 3: Destination Berlin I have mixed feelings. On the one hand, everything seems to be as it should be and there are no fundamental changes, but on the other, something has begun to change, and not for the better. Be that as it may, the game is by no means bad, but no breakthroughs were expected. Still, I recommend everyone to check out the original trilogy Commandos.
