The department decides to create a special squad to find out what exactly happened and catch the culprits. We will play as one of the three fighters of the squad.
You can choose from a policeman, an FBI agent and a drug control representative who miraculously escaped a terrorist attack; each of the characters has their own skeleton in the closet.
With the previous parts of the series, The cartel is united by only one character from our trio, Ben McCall, a distant relative of one of the main characters, as many believe Ray McCall, but in one of the interviews the developers said that after Ray’s death, Billy Candle took his last name, but in appearance Ben is similar to the Reverend. Someone contradicts himself. Some more levels return us to the ghost town of Juarez, and the Aztec gold will again be returned to the plot, and we will find ourselves in the famous fortress from the previous parts of the series.
Each of the heroes has their own goals. Kim has a brother who is in a street gang and for his sake she has to break the law. Eddie has a gambling addiction, which causes him to have a lot of debt. And Ben is trying to help a former prostitute not return to the streets. This all results in separate tasks for each character. The essence of which is finding some objects on the level or talking with some characters. For completing tasks they give experience, with each increase in level a new weapon is unlocked. When lifting an object, your partner may “catch you by the hand” and you will not be given experience. With this, the developers wanted to diversify the characters, who apart from this have no differences, although for each it is written who uses what better, although I didn’t notice the difference.
The gameplay is based on three pillars. Driving a car, the controls are reminiscent of an iron, shootings, boring and monotonous, and searching for objects to increase the level. There are also fist fights, two blows and the enemy lies down, why they were returned from the first part is unclear. Thank God the fights are only at the beginning. So the gameplay can be described as follows: first get to the scene of action, then shoot out and chase some suspect.

All this is at the very least mixed and presented in disgusting graphics, which, it seemed to me, are much worse than in the first games. The animation is wooden, there is more dust from explosions than fire, on the road during a cut-scene a car can drive right through the heroes more than once, there is a LOT of blur, the eyes hurt from playing for a long time.
The shooting was upsetting. It is impossible to hit anyone from the hip; when aiming, everything becomes blurry and only where you are looking is clear. Adding a larger selection of guns did not help make the game more diverse; quantity of weapons does not mean quality. Pistols and machine guns don’t feel like "real" weapons.
Artificial intelligence adds fuel to the fire. Enemies sit in cover and wait to die, and the number of enemies in one shootout is not as many as we would like. Well, to be honest, in the previous parts the dummies also did not shine with intelligence, but at least they made some dashes. The game has become even more like a shooting gallery, especially when playing with a controller.
The management surprised me. Playing with a gamepad I liked the revolvers. He took aim, shot, hit the head. The machine seemed weak and unnecessary. Later, I switched to the keyboard. How surprised I was when pressing A or D switched weapons. That is, the movement buttons were not WASD, but QWES, this is the strangest layout. To throw a grenade, you need to turn the wheel down. I think few people could play for so long. It’s good that the layout can be changed. With the help of a keyboard and mouse it has become easier to use machine guns and Uzis, but this is my personal opinion.
Slo-mo doesn’t help either. Everything is as always, when killing enemies, the “concentration” scale accumulates, after it is filled, press one button and hang out headshots for a couple of seconds.

At one level you had to quickly move two bags of money before a fuel tank exploded, this is complicated by the fact that enemies are also shooting at you. In such a situation, there is zero help from your partners, it is VERY annoying.
I think it’s time to sum it up. Call of jurez: the Cartel reminded me of two games – Kane and Lynch, weak graphics and dull shootings. And in its driving and control of the car it is similar to Boomer: Torn Towers. Well, maybe it was just me.
The plot, although it has four endings, is weak and banal, like most action films of the 80s. The shooting doesn’t have enough stars in the sky, it’s better to cut out the jeep chases altogether. Add brains to artificial intelligence. The picture would do well to remove so much blur, although without it all the angularities of the graphics would come out.
I wouldn’t recommend playing this, it’s better to replay all the other parts or any other shooter.

I was distracted from my thoughts by the sudden stop of the column. I grabbed the machine gun more comfortably with my hands, since in war any deviation from the planned plan of action is either a deliberate decision or an unforeseen and very dangerous circumstance. Meanwhile, the Chechen took me out of the small courtyard, and I saw something that made me feel both worse and better at the same time.
On something like a square, my guys were lined up in a column. Or rather, what’s left of them. About ten people in frayed, torn clothes stood, sullenly staring at the frozen ground. A bearded mountaineer walked proudly in front of them. He had a Kalashnikov slung over his shoulder, and his coal-black eyes glared into everyone’s face.
Clouds were gathering above us, their blackness clouded the surface of the sky.

I remembered their names. The first, tall and thin guy was called Andrei Stepnov, the second, stocky and muscular, athletic fighter – Nikita Shcherbakov.
He took the first step towards his former comrade. Came close. Andrei awkwardly backed away, uncertainly clenching and unclenching his fists, sliding in the wet mud. Some spirit laughed contemptuously. Shcherbakov briefly poked Andrei in the stomach without swinging, but he immediately shrank and hunched over. Another blow. By the face. Stepnov fell to the ground, the rain poured on him, mixed him with mud, flooded his eyes. Nikita slowly bent down and hit again. Andrei shrank, awkwardly covered his face with his hand, but a fist fell on him, breaking his pitiful defense. Blood splashed onto the wet jacket, the water immediately washed it away, but blow after blow began to follow. Stepnov cried, but the inexorable rain did not tolerate any sign of weakness. Shcherbakov became furious and began beating Stepnov, forgetting about his homeland, country, duty, oath. He forgot about everything under this downpour, his consciousness became foggy, his reason went away, giving way to wolfish primitive instincts. When it seemed that everything was predetermined, a turning point happened. Stepnov tried to kick the enemy in the stomach, and he succeeded. We were herded back to the barns. Their main one, when they tore Andrei’s corpse away from him, was dead. The corpses of both Andrei and Shcherbakov were thrown into the abyss.

But at the same time, I haven’t reviewed the film for more than 20 years… Therefore, having decided to refresh my memory of the film, I was, to put it mildly, very surprised. In adulthood, “Captain Hook” is perceived completely differently than in childhood. But first things first!
From the first minutes we are shown a matured Pete, for whom his career is much higher than the desires of his family. At the same time, the hero of Robin Williams does not look repulsive, he simply forgot how to be a child. Moreover, every scene of the film is filled with colors, humor and action. “Captain Hook” is a family movie from Spielberg from the 90s, and that says it all.
Next, Pete, along with his wife and children, visits Wendy’s shelter… And at this point the plot of the film completely falls apart. Understanding the ancestry of the Peng family was quite difficult. Just think about it, Peter Pan had children with his half-sister, and his adopted (90-year-old) mother is his ex-lover. George Martin never dreamed of this!

A great and very funny action awaits us, although the drama seemed unnecessary to me. Rufio didn’t have time to prove himself, and everyone quickly forgot about him.
Without a doubt, Captain Hook is a wonderful film, but it has a number of shortcomings. Julia Roberts did a brilliant job in her role. At that time, not many films were released that used green screens, and it was doubly difficult for the actress. The real treasure of the film was Dustin Hoffman. A crazy, cool and very funny pirate with his own code of honor.
Robin Williams played the role of Peter well, but he did it as if on autopilot. It seems to me that Williams was too far from the image of Peter Pan, and the role itself was poorly written in the script. Steven Spielberg couldn’t decide what kind of film he wanted to make – a fairy tale for the whole family or a drama about fathers and sons. Many creative people had a hand in the production of “Captain Hook,” but the film lacked an evil producer who could remove unnecessary storylines and shorten the running time.

Ukiyotei employees had no experience in developing games for SMD, so the Core Design studio, the future creators of Tomb Raider, was sent to help them. Core Design’s main efforts were aimed at creating an expanded version for the Sega CD. All the game’s cutscenes were fully voiced, and at the beginning there was a small video with Captain Hook’s ship. The port also contains music from the film and several small video clips, but otherwise it is identical to the SMD version.
Ukiyotei subsequently developed games for the SNES until it was acquired by SNK in 2002. Among the significant projects I can mention: Todd McFarlane’s Spawn: The Video Game, the Metal Slug Mission series, as well as Punky Skunk.
Ukiyotei tried not to take risks and made a traditional platformer. All versions of Hook use 2 control buttons, which has become a controversial decision – gamers have to hold down the attack button to make Pan run.
From a mechanical point of view, the game turned out to be quite primitive. Besides running, Pan can only jump and hit with a sword. But Hook still had one truly unique feature – flight. Ukiyotei knew what gamers wanted, and the flight sections turned out to be interesting and memorable. I liked that we have entire levels based entirely on flying. For example, at the level in the mountains we must slowly and carefully spend fairy pollen so as not to fall into the abyss, and at the level in the forest we need to constantly move, running away from the constantly scrolling screen.
Each level in the game is designed in a similar way. For example, in Neverland Skeleton Rock, Peter is haunted by an annoying light. Fire is dangerous, but it also lights the path for the hero. The boss fight with the skeleton king turned out to be quite interesting and dynamic. The bosses, in general, turned out to be quite good. In addition to the skeleton king, I remember the flying boss and the fight with Captain Hook.
Another important feature of the game was the search for leaves and a magic sword. The leaf increases the life scale and provides great assistance in passing. The sword is capable of delivering ranged attacks, but it disappears after receiving damage.
Ukiyotei made a good and undeservedly forgotten game. Of course, many games using a pirate setting were released in the fourth generation (Pirates of Dark Water, Cutthroat Island, Melfand Stories). There were many games that developed flight mechanics (Rocket Knight, Gargoyles, Demon’s Crest), but they all came out later. The developers lacked the courage and experience to remain in history. But Ukiyotei will still have a chance to create a hit platformer about Peter Pan.
The SMD port was not very successful. Graphics and music suffered greatly. Animations and backgrounds have lost detail. This is most noticeable at the first level. The Nevertree is constantly changing weather and seasons. Leaves and snowflakes fly around the level, and the environment changes literally on the fly. But all this is only in the SNES version, all this is not on SMD. Water and lighting effects on SMD are particularly weak. The Sega CD port benefits from the film’s music, but I don’t recommend these versions for playthroughs.
The port on Sega Game Gear turned out to be quite good. It was created by the British studio Spidersoft. The developers tried and transferred most of the gameplay and mechanics of the original. Yes, the game feels a little raw and buggy, but Spidersoft made the gameplay easier and adjusted the hitboxes towards the player. Not all levels are included on Game Gear, but there is an exclusive boss.
“Captain Hook” is a real blockbuster, and Sony loved experiments in the 90s, so we got a whole bunch of video games in different genres. I won’t focus on them, but it would be a crime to forget about these adaptations.
Arcade – An incredibly colorful and driving beat ‘em up was released by Irem for arcade cabinets. This version of Hook suffered greatly due to Western censorship. The color palette has been changed and has become closer to the film of the same name. Pirate bosses have been removed because Peter Pan can’t hit girls. The Japanese company Irem was at the origins of the beat ‘em up genre (Kung-Fu Master, Vigilante, Spartan X 2). The Irem company did not lower the quality bar for a long time and released cool bitmaps (Undercover Cops, Blade Master).

The game is very drawn out, especially the levels under water. The best mini-game was where we control the flying Peter. Ocean Software’s signature electronic soundtrack has become a real highlight. This branch became most famous thanks to the legendary AVGN review. In fact, everything is not so bad, for the Commodore 64 it’s a quite decent platformer.
Interestingly, in 1994, Hook released a “spiritual sequel” called Skyblazer. This platformer was released on SNES and was also developed by Ukiyotei and published by Sony Imagesoft. This was not a typical project for Sony, as the publisher focused on film licenses and sports games. The giant believed in the small company and gave it a chance to create a AAA game. Ukiyotei was very enthusiastic about the project and, inspired by Indian mythology, created an amazing world.
The main character is Sky, who will have to save Ariana from the evil Lord of War. In the Japanese version, all the characters were named after Indian gods, so the American release lost some of its flavor.
What connects this game with the movie “Captain Hook”? Nothing! But just playing the game is enough to understand that this is a sequel to Hook, released on SNES. We expect the same approach to dynamics, gameplay and level construction. Some enemies and bosses came straight from Hook. There is a world map and levels with autoscrolling.
But there is one major change – every element of the game has been refined and improved. Now we can walk around the world map and return to previously completed locations. This must be done because forks have appeared in the levels. In Hook we were also given a choice of where to go, but the scale was several times smaller. Flight levels have been developed. Skye can maneuver in the air and deliver swift attacks, and Skyblazer also has a very nice mini-game that uses Mode 7.
Ukiyotei tried very hard to demonstrate a beautiful and technologically advanced picture. Several bosses and the Towers of Tarolisk level were created using Mode 7. Unlike Peter, Skye can crawl along some walls, but the most interesting difference was the magic system. After defeating the boss, Skye learns a new spell. For example, The Flash allows you to fly through the air for quite a long distance in a straight line. Magic brings a lot of variety to the gameplay, although some spells look useless compared to the almighty healing.
The main disadvantage of Skyblazer was its length. Towards the end the enemies and levels start to repeat themselves. I also didn’t like the fact that you have to hold down the jump button to fly. In any case, Skyblazer is a real masterpiece and an excellent SNES exclusive.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 is made primarily for fans of the series, but even if you are a newbie and the last names Woods, Adler or Mason don’t mean anything to you, that’s okay. The campaign mainly revolves around the new protagonist with his cockroaches.
The hero’s name is Case. This is a character without a voice, appearance, character or will. But with its own story, which is actively told in the second half of the game.
The plot of the shooter is simple. By the early 1990s, the CIA had acquired more traitors with their own goals. The group, which is called "Pantheon", has sufficient resources and power to influence events around the world, including in the United States, the USSR and the Persian Gulf region. It was here that the conflict between Iraq and Kuwait took place with the intervention of the forces of the international coalition that opposed the regime of Saddam Hussein.
So, the historical reference is over. What follows is only absurd fiction, amusing fiction and outright nonsense. Unfortunately for me, a lover of history – including fictional.
Valiant CIA agents Marshall, Harrow and Calderon (Case’s last name) face unexpected difficulties while completing their mission. First, the target that needed to be saved speaks in fear about the powerful "Pantheon". And then this target is killed – and Adler himself does it. Celebrity agent says you can’t trust anyone. Including colleagues and members of the CIA leadership.
Soon the protagonists realize the truth of these words and organize a group of rogue specialists who can unravel the tangle of secrets and prevent the “Pantheon”. This group, in addition to the disgraced CIA officers, included the German technician Felix and the Moroccan assassin Sev.
Both characters have similar personalities, but still look at them for yourself. Felix is an excellent technician who has sworn not to resort to violence because of his past in the Stasi… However, when necessary, the principles of a specialist fade into the background. And the peace-loving Felix turns into a killing machine. Comfortable.
Well, and Sev… After the betrayal, she wants to take revenge on the criminals from the Guild. And at the same time she reveals herself as an excellent camouflage specialist. So beautiful that Sev is not recognized even by former employers and colleagues. She will become an ideal “employee” who will not be recognized by any real employee of the enterprise. You play through it and don’t understand how so many mockeries of common sense were crammed into a shooter that was supposed to be a spy action movie. It is clear that the developers wanted to show that operations can be like this. But personally, I would have to completely turn off my brain to enjoy this task.
If the beginning of the game looks like historical fan fiction on the theme of the war in Iraq, then as it goes on, the more the plot is dedicated to Case. Starting his line, you smile at the developers who skillfully intertwine their modes. Yes, that’s the writers’ imagination! In general, the main plot of Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 is very, very predictable… Not in details, but in general. If the plot of Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 is lame on both legs, then the gameplay is pleasantly surprising. Of course, there is nothing revolutionary here: first of all, this is a shooter. But with additions in the form of various missions, simple puzzles, calm movement around the location and exciting scenes. Even if they are few, they are memorable. Maybe precisely because there are few of them..
Here’s a motorcycle ride – bright, but very short. Here – they finally let you shoot with a machine gun on a helicopter! And one more thing! And one more thing! And again – using a different technique – they allow you to feel not like a pathetic insect, but the very embodiment of death.
So, between the main missions with focus on shooting and action, players find themselves in an old estate, where the characters communicate with each other, and simple riddles await the hero. The puzzles themselves in the shooter are really nothing special: here is a lock that needs to be cracked, here is a code where you need to enter the correct characters in the right order, and there is a change in radio waves to obtain new information.
In the estate, among other things, we can arrange special areas useful for improving our skills. And then use in-game money to upgrade Case’s skills: shooting, health, amount of ammunition, and so on.
The developers of Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 motivate players to explore locations to get more money. Small amounts may lie on tables or on the floor, but especially large amounts are kept in hiding places and safes. To open these, you need to know the code, and for this you have to solve another puzzle. In general, thanks to this mechanic, the completion of the shooter becomes longer, but all this is entirely optional. And personally, I’m glad to have the opportunity to slow down a little and calmly explore the area.
Ultimately, the money received can be spent not only on hero bonuses in the campaign, but also on weapons for multiplayer.
But let’s get back to the gameplay! As in Cold War, players are given a certain freedom when completing individual missions. So, often the hero can choose whether to act noisily or secretly. And in the case of the latter, not only kill enemies unnoticed, but also hide bodies. However, no Agent 47 or Ezio will come out of the Case: the stealth here is purely primitive.
In general, this kind of gameplay is pleasant, although when killing enemies secretly, strange bugs may arise when the hero is noticed by those who should not see him.
In addition, sometimes in order to complete a global mission they offer to complete smaller tasks – and at the same time optional ones. It would be nice if this approach was maintained throughout the game, but the current version is very acceptable. If you want more information or bonuses, spend more time preparing.
And I would like to separately mention a couple of extremely interesting tasks that stand out from the rest of the standard approach. It is clear that the developers decided to experiment and offer players something unexpected. Well done, if only there was more of this!
In order not to spoil the whole thing, I will briefly touch on just one such mission. A large-scale task that can frighten the atmosphere, but at the same time offers an experience reminiscent of Atomic Heart – with the unusualness of what is happening and driving music in the background. All this at minimum wages, of course. The developers have not reached the level of Mundfish, although I praise them for their desire.
At the same time, I must note that I liked the completion of Black Ops 6 in this regard much less than the experiments in the middle of the game. All this drama and psychologism, escape into feelings and working through internal problems… All these moments could have been easily reduced by replacing the boredom of the next “turn” with a rapid heartbeat during dynamic gameplay. But it turned out how it turned out.
Even if you take away the pros and cons described above, there are still things that make Black Ops 6 much worse. Bugs and technical problems.
The beauty of the picture is forgotten, but days and weeks after completion, memories of problems with textures remain. For example, there is nothing on the screen that prevents you from making accurate shots at targets, but the fired bullets hit invisible walls. And the player’s plans go to hell, and the hero may even face death.
The same textures work strangely when moving around locations. Such problems are especially annoying during stealth missions, when every second and movement trajectories are important. But it happens, and this is a special case, that during the first passage of a task you can walk between the table and the door, and during the second, our old friend appears in the same place – an invisible wall. You waste time, make unnecessary movements and most sincerely spit at what is happening..
The game has beautiful cinematics and the picture as a whole. Especially some luxurious locations.
How wonderful it is when your progress during a mission is reset and after restarting the game you have to start all over again… Do the same things again to achieve the same result. And then you just abandon the original plan and create a meat grinder that you so wanted to avoid during your first playthrough.
They also add “positive” moments when Black Ops 6 throws an error right during a mission. When you reach a certain point, you are simply kicked out of the game, requiring you to load an autosave and run to that moment again… To hope that you won’t be kicked out again. Spoiler: he might throw it out again. And all this only on PlayStation 5.
Ultimately, if only the pros and cons of the game remained on my scales, the score would be slightly higher. But when a large and experienced company releases a product containing such unpleasant errors, the negative side significantly outweighs.
